The City of Los Angeles Department of Aging established the Home-Delivered Meals Program, also known as MEALS ON WHEELS LOS ANGELES, in 1988. The goal of the program is to provide at least one hot, nutritional meal on a daily basis to low-income, frail elderly in the City of Los Angeles.
The home-delivered meals program is the safety net that can mean the difference between staying at home or moving into institutionalized care. Meals on Wheels Los Angeles promote dignity and aging in place by providing an avenue of independence for Los Angeles’ low-income, frail elderly and a degree of support for their caregivers.
Since its inception, the home-delivered meals program has never been adequately funded through public sources. Seniors (aged 65 and over) are the fastest-growing segment of our population. As this community increases, so does the gap in funding for this vital program.
Public support of the home-delivered meals program in the City of Los Angeles provides over 700,000 meals annually to low-income, frail elderly daily, Monday through Friday. This government funding, though, is not sufficient to provide meals to these seniors on weekends, holidays or emergencies. Meals on Wheels Los Angeles provides the much-needed additional funding which, for instance, serves approximately 10,000 meals on Thanksgiving Day citywide to those seniors who would otherwise not receive a traditional holiday meal.
The Los Angeles Foundation on Aging (LAFA) is a 501(c)(3) that raises funds to enhance existing programs offered by the City of Los Angeles Department of Aging and develop new and innovative programs to address the unmet needs of seniors and their caregivers in the City of Los Angeles.
